With work from home becoming the new norm amid lockdown, it came as no surprise when comfortable clothing came to be the go-to wardrobe choice for all consumers alike. According to Lyst’s ‘Stay At Home’ live data blog, searches for sweatpants, white t-shirts, hoodies and leggings are on the rise — reaffirming that the consumer is clearly seeking all forms of relaxed wears while they self-isolate. So what does this change in behaviour have to say for fashion post-lockdown?
With the pandemic looming overhead, the industry’s rallying cry to rewire fashion weeks and realign its seasonal calendar has created a strong case for seasonless and trend-neutral wears. “This pandemic has brought to light that fashion seasons are kind of nonsense,” claims Emily Gordon-Smith, director of consumer product at trend analysis firm Stylus as she foresees a move towards a trendless and seasonless approach with collections driven by the individual vision of the brand rather than one tapping into shifting seasonal trends.
Clothing with longevity, versatility and comfort are going to be a better sell for the consumer going forward well after lockdown is lifted. Social distancing and travel restrictions are here to stay and have made it impossible to relive the moments we once got dressed up for — visiting restaurants, bars, attending weddings or parties, not to mention even traveling to an exotic location abroad is going to be a thing of the past for a long time. Putting on a pair of heels or skinny jeans just won’t seem practical anymore as we get used to living in our comfortable garb. While adjusting to the new norm is hard there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to enjoy the art of dressing up with season-neutral loungewear.
If you’re short on a supply of good knitwear, in the market for a new hoodie or just want to try on a stylish pair of sweatpants? Now is the time to settle in with a cup of coffee and get scrolling. Start with this curated list, though. Below are some of our very best seasonless menswear and womenswear picks across several styles and weather needs that are every bit as comfy, cosy and appropriate for all sorts of zoom calls.
